Macrotron Introduces Low Profile 512MB Memory Module
Just Call it "Shorty"
  • Macrotron 512MB PC100 DIMM CL2 lowest in height at 1.15 inches.
  • Available in 256MB and 512MB Memory Modules.
  • PC100 Compliant with PC133 in Development.
  • Benefits are Lower Power, Lower Capacitance, Reduced Height and Better Reliability.
Macrotron Systems,Inc. of Fremont, CA, a premier producer of PC memory modules for over 10 years, has introduced a low profile (1.15 inch, 29.2mm) 512MB DIMM, dubbed “Shorty”, that is PC100 compliant, with a PC133 module on the horizon. The escalating microprocessor performance challenges existing SDRAM modules to perform better. Lack of available memory capacity and oversized modules constrain the development of the more powerful applications. The Macrotron “Shorty” was designed to enhance the performance of servers, workstations, multimedia, and telecommunications. Thin Client Servers can increase their memory capacity and performance while remaining thin!

Macrotron is using leading edge memory device technology at the 256 Mb density with sub 0.2 micron technology to bring the customer state-of-the-art memories. The survivalof high technology companies is directly related to their ability to build better, faster, denser products. Technology driven companies are always looking for more memory in a smaller package. “Shorty” does that for these customers, and more. It takes a forward-looking company like Macrotron to take the risks necessary to bring technological breakthroughs like “Shorty” to the marketplace. Macrotron is the innovation leader with the commitment to providing solutions to future problems.

Macrotron is shipping the MS3328L6472S-100, which is a 512MegaByte unbuffered memory module configured as 64 Megabits x 72 bits (ECC), PC100 compliant, CL2, in a standard 168-pin DIMM. Prices start at $995.00 in small quantities.

Besides the smaller form factor, some additional advantages “Shorty” offers to the customer are:
  1. Power Saving
By quadrupling the density to 256Mb memory devices, the average power per module drops dramatically comparing similar configurations

  2. Lower Module Profile
The 256MB and 512MB SDRAM DIMM modules can now sport a slimmer look. The height of the module can be reduced to 1.15 inch. This becomes important in areas where height is at a premium, such as, network appliances, thin-client applications, networking solutions, solid-state disks, RAID Controllers, single board computers, etc.

  3. Reduced Module Capacitance
Since the memory chips have similar input and output capacitances, and the new modules use one-fourth as many chips, the resultant capacitive load contributed by the memory chips is cut in fourths. This enhances the signals on unbuffered modules and reduces undershoot and overshoot resulting in reduced electrical noise.

  4. Better Reliability
Increased reliability is the result of many contributing factors, some of which are: fewer interconnects and solder joints, fewer components to handle and test, reduced operating temperature due to lower power per module, etc.

  5. Competitive
Not only do you get all of the benefits mentioned above, but also you get it at a very competitive price. Everybody wins on this one.
  6.
